Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I intelligently shop for diamonds?
Steve: Ann yourself with knowledge. Most stones are graded on a set of ratings set forth by the
Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Unfortunately, these gradings are often misrepresented by the
actual sellers of the diamonds. Essentially, they can give the stones virtually any grading they want, and
if the consumer is not educated, he or she will not know the difference. Learn the grading scales and
look at many stones. It is a must to find a jeweler who adheres to GIA standards.

Q: How do I find a reputable jeweler?
Steve: Ask around. Find a family owned shop that has been around for years. Ask for store credentials;
are they a member of the Jewelers of America? Ask about important store policies such as warranties,
service and guarantees. Also, ask to see different quality grades of stones for comparison.

Q: Should I buy 2 loose stone or do I get a better deal buying the whole ring?
Steve: Buy the stone loose. The actual weight of the diamond is the most significant factor in
determining a diamond's value. A true diamond dealer will weigh the diamond in front of you on a
government regulated scale. There is too great a risk for the customer when a stone is already set. Also,
when setting a diamond, it is common (and sensible) to put any defects or "inclusions" under a prong.
The problem with buying the whole ring is that you cannot "see" what you're buying. Most stores will
not charge a setting fee if both the stone and setting are purchased there.

Q: What attributes have the greatest effect on price:
Steve
: In terms of value, they would rank in the following order: 1. Carat Weight; 2. Color; 3. Clarity; 4.
Cut. Diamond prices typically increase significantly at the .5 carat and 1.0 carat weights. For a cost
savings secret, try to buy a loose stone weighing just under the .5 or l.0 carat weights. Unlike the Gold
Mine, most stores do not pass these cost savings on to their customers. I

Q: What shape is the best'?
Steve:
That depends on several things: l. Personal preference; 2. Desired brilliance (round brilliant has
the most); 3. Weight (fancies look more elegant in large sizes); 4. How big you want it to look.
